If you don't like walking, and you don't have a car, you can easily travel around by bus or train.
An efficient bus network connects Montepulciano not only to the small towns in the area, but also to Siena, Arezzo, Firenze and Roma.
Chiusi - 20 km. far from Montepulciano, frequent buses - is one of the most important railway connections in the centre of Italy.
Here are some proposals for one-day excursions, by using public transportation:
CHOO CHOO TRAIN TOUR
      www.ferrovieturistiche.it:80/p.asp?p=trenonatura.asp
Experience a choo choo train tour through one of the world’s most beautiful landscapes… Live the fantastic dream of a past-time adventure between the historical-and-environmental Val d’Orcia district and the Mount Amiata Wildlife Park… Re-discover the pleasure of feeling the nature’s forgotten atmospheres!
ONE-DAY EXCURSION TO ROME
Reach Chiusi by bus. Frequent departures from Montepulciano terminal, trip duration: about 1 hour.
From Chiusi station, reach Rome-Termini by train. Trip duration: about 1 h 30.
Once in Rome, you can use one of the tourist buses, all of them starting their tour from the Station Square.
They are: 110 open (a general tour); Roma Cristiana  (main churches  and basilicas); Archeobus (a specific, archaeological tour along the Via Appia  Antica);
otherwise, experience a boat tour on the Tiber (departures from Castel Sant’Angelo).

In the evening, back to Chiusi by train, then to Montepulciano by bus.

ONE-DAY EXCURSION TO FLORENCE
Reach Chiusi by bus. Frequent departures from Montepulciano terminal, trip duration: about 1 hour.
From Chiusi station, reach Firenze-Santa Maria Novella by train: trip duration: about 1 h 30.
In Florence, being the station very central and at a very short distance from practically all the places of interest, we would recommend that you walk rather than use public transportation.
In the evening, back to Chiusi by train, then to Montepulciano by bus.
ONE-DAY EXCURSION TO SIENA
For this excursion, being Siena positioned away from the main railway, using the bus is definitively easier than taking the train.
Siena is about 60 kms far from Montepulciano.
